Title: Colonial Economy and the Reconstruction of National Community Consciousness in Tennyson’s Poetry
Abstract: As the literary spokesperson of the Victorian era and British colonial rule, Tennyson’s poetry profoundly reflects the political and economic conditions of his time as well as his response to the predicaments of the era. The representation and critique of the colonial economic system and its consequences constitute a major motivation behind his literary work. His melancholic writings of homesickness and boudoir yearning not only convey deep sympathy for weary pawns entangled in the vast chessboard of the colonial economy but also reveal his alertness to the ongoing disintegration of national community brought about by economic expansion. In his middle and later works, he continues to express his anxious meditation on the colonial economic system in long poems such as “Locksley Hall” and commits himself to rewriting the Arthurian legend in an attempt to reconsolidate a sense of British national community.
